New to the boards! Hi there, LOL.

Anyway, I am seriously contemplating relocating from New York to Maryland. (I used to live in Maryland years ago, Glen Burnie to be exact).

Anyway, I realize that I am beating a dead horse here, but I have four cities that I am interested in due to job opportunities: Baltimore, Bethesda, Silver Spring, and Rockville. Now, I know a little more about Baltimore. I prefer a suburban area of the city, namely Catonsville, Columbia, and Glen Burnie. I have been doing some research but I guess that it seems better to ask people that actually live in Maryland.

So, the question is, how safe are these three suburbs (Catonsville, Columbia, and Glen Burnie). I am more partial to Columbia and Catonsville, BTW. I am also looking for affordable apartments or townhouses in these areas as well.

Thanks,

MarylandChic

I *think* Catonsville is more affordable than Columbia. My sis in law lives around the Putty Hill area, which is out near White Marsh. That is also an older neigborhood (PH) like Catonsville. I don't like cities at all, so I naturally think none of them are safe lol but you'll get plenty of good advice from the people on here. I've delivered to Catonsville several times, and visited Putty Hill several times; and really wouldn't be worried about living in either one.

Thank you for the advice, cutgarden. I had a suspicion that Columbia was a tad more expensive than Catonsville. Hmm, so based on your assertion, I would do additional research on Putty Hill and White Marsh, although I still have Columbia on the backburner.

Additionally, what is everyone's take on Perry Hill in terms of safety?

All three places have unsafe areas and nice areas, depends on how much money you're looking to put out. In my opinion, as a whole Columbia is the most safe and Glen Burnie the least, Catonsville probably in between. Affordable in Columbia usually equals trouble lol. You gotta put out some money to enjoy. Catonsville could be your best bet because it is nicer than Glen Burnie and cheaper than Columbia. And you'll be closer to Baltimore in Catonsville. It's very affordable in the Catonsville/Halethorpe/Arbutus area. Best bang for you buck, and right next to Rt 40 where you can find almost everything.

Well, I figured that I would look into townhouses or larger houses in the Catonsville area then. However, I notice that most of the houses that I look at are in close proximity to wooded areas...

NY to MD? That's like fleeing from Vietnam to Laos.

It is hard to compare NY, a state, to cities. If you are from the NYC, I'm sure you will find all of the suburbs safe. If you are from upstate in the middle of no where, perhaps they will seem dangerous. If you are in the suburbs of NYC, I think you will find the communities comparable in safety and more affordable.
