We might relocate to Maryland for a job in Baltimore. Can anyone suggest an areas with good elementary schools ,
low crime and decent housing?
We have a 2700 square foot home here, and we are wondering how much an equvalent size home would sell/rent for there.

Well it depends on the area, If you look in Howard county 350,000+ Baltimore County a little lower. Anne Arundel closer to Baltimore is expensive as well. Harford, Carroll County might be lower as well.

Thank you. The most important issue is safety for the kids and me, of course. We might end up renting if the housing is too high. I just don't want to move the kids around a lot, so it would be nice to settle somewhere more long term if possible.

Good idea. Actually if that could be the case, I would probably just stay put and commute a few times a week from Michigan...hmmm.
Not sure my hubby is up for that.

BTW, a 2700 sqft single family home in Howard County would sale for $550K+ in most areas. $350K maybe for a pretty rundown home in an iffy area.

Here in Michigan that size house goes from $250k and up....in great neighborhoods. I expect we will just rent if we move there then.

Will the income from the job pay for the house
Just wondering, house prices are going down, will the money from the job pay for the housing? That is what you should figure, Michigan economy is in the tanks expected to get worse a portion of it is political, yes MD is expensive and so is nova and dc for what you get but if you are willing to commute an extra 30 minutes to an hour you can find reasonable priced homes.

45-60 minute cmmute would be acceptable to get a better house price in a good place. Might even consider living in adjoining state.
