Salisbury Crime Get Real
OK people, lets get real. I have lived from one coast to the other and Salisbury is probably the safest town I have lived in since I was a child. (Long time ago). As man people stated EVERY town has bad areas. In Salisbury they are few and far between. Go to the West side of town and look at some of the new developments like Sleepy Hollow. Families out walking the dog, wave as you drive by, even if they don't know you. Steeplechase has homes that are both beautiful and affordable. This is a great community where if you look for trouble it will find you.
If you are looking for a reason not to move to Maryland, research the local tax rates.

I have yet to have anyone wave at me in those developments. Yes every town does have bad areas but with the smaller size of Salisbury that means those bad areas are that much closer to the good ones. Just look at the old Victorian houses near the Hospital and SU. They are literally blocks from being "in the hood". Im sorry but I fail to see the "charm" of the area. There are few decent paying jobs, high crime(per capita) and real estate here is WAAAAYYYY overpriced. Funny, I didnt look for trouble when my car was vandalized and broken into a few yrs ago.

Thank You sir! I mean I used to live with a crackhouse adjacent to mine and never was my house broken in or my car robbed or me assaulted. Gosh, I have lived everywhere in Salisbury, even in the projects for a year. I dont know, maybe it is you all's experience that makes you feel unsafe, but you have to realize this, unless you plan on living in the middle of nowhere or in a town with less than a hundred people, then forgot about 0 crime. Also, there is so much empty land around and in Salisbury one can build a house with no worries of being threatened. Damn, look around the Target, Walmart, the Mall. So much farmland and forest. Come on folks.

Hi, there are nice places in Salisbury. I would avoid downtown altogether. Outskirts are fine. Also, Pittsville, Willards, Parsonsburg are all nice. Pittsville schools are better regarded if you have kids that will be going to public school. Hope this helps.

Yes.
But consider where you are in your career. You can expect about 40% of your pre-retirement pay in the Md. state retirement system for teachers.
And, of course, that's based on today's policies and economy. . .
My mom's cousin just retired after 33 years in a district in Pa outside of Philly.
He is getting 90% of his top three years plus paid medical.
Now to me, THAT"S a retirement check! And after teaching your whole life, a just reward.
I never thought 30 years ahead when I started teaching but I wish I had. Once you get so far into teaching, when you want to change it becomes a matter of payscales and years served and what a county/district will take - they don't have to take all of your time and pay.
Consider it.

Forget this town and run for Worcester County (Ocean City area)....infrastructure is crumbling, crime is WAY out of control, and there is nothing for kids to do....I have a 4 yr. Old and a 2 yr. Old, and we are ,ovine as fast as we can...not safe at all...I quit my job as a teacher here because oft is and the absolutely bizarre antics of leadership. Both in the county and the school system, and can tell you that asan educator with over 20 years experience, this is not a school system you want your kids in. I have no idea where the people on this posting say they are from, or that this is a nice small town, but they are full of baloney! Currently, Salisbury has the 4th highest crime index in per capita crime nationally. Now that simply means you are more likely to be a victim of crime here than many other places. Further, I was teaching at that school when the shooting occurred, and much was covered up! The place hs a few nice homes. But do not be fooled....take a trip here and look for yourself....bums and beggars everywhere (they frequent the Giant parking lot)....the local mall can't hold business (retailers have pretty much given up, and now the stores feature 'getto' type stores (like Man Alive- what the he'll is that?).... I would never come here! As for teacher salaries, those are averages.... Wicomico teacher salary scales are third from the bottom of the state currently, and it shows...zero professionalism, and just horrible teachers....This is why I quit, and am moving my family, and you should forget this place.

the people who are posting that salisbury is a nice small town are probably retired and do not have children in public schools. i lived in salisbury, in a house about a mile from the college, from 2001 to 2006, in a period when crime, as documented on city-data reports was as bad or worse than now. i loved it there, never felt unsafe, and for most of the years there, lived alone. contrary to your comments, salisbury has many gorgeous neighborhoods- hunting park, tony tank, rustic acres, nithdale, colbourne woods- to name a few. for a town it's size, it has an incredible variety of beautiful neighborhoods. as far as the mall, most malls in any size towns have lost businesses in the last few years. i was in salisbury two weeks ago, in the giant parking lot, and, contrary to description of "bums and beggars" flooding the lot, i didn't notice anyone who didn't appear to be a shopper. i'm sure, in these economic times, you're going to see some homeless there sometime, but you paint a very skewed, negative view of life there, which is far from the total picture, based on my conversations with friends who still live there, my experiences when i lived there, and now, what i see when i frequently visit.
young families with children would have a different set of criteria than someone, such as myself, who moved there as an older adult. however, i knew and continue to know many couples with children who moved there for a small town enviornment in which to raise their kids, and, for the most part, are still happy with their choice. the wicomico co. schools have certainly never been a drawing card, and worcester county-berlin, ocean city, ocean pines,etc.- has a better reputation than wicomico. there are private schools that seem to be more viable in both counties. the major complaint i heard when i lived there, primarily from people who had moved there from other places, was lack of cultural activities, although the college has become more diverse in what they offer- music, drama, speakers bureau- to the community.
i loved living there and found it a very low-key, friendly town with a southern feel.there are certainly not a lot of job opportunities there and i'm certain salaries are far from competitive. that may not be what a young family wants or needs, but it draws many middle-aged and retired folks. i miss it and if i could , i'd probably seriously consider moving back.
