You sure about this? Don't make sense to me. If one can't work (and thus can't pay taxes), why does one need a TIN (or ITIN)?

Because you are a dependent and as such your spouse or parent can include you in their taxes, plus you need an ITIN for your bank accounts etc. The OP is entitled to a SSN and needs one. Life without a SSN is a real pain and most people do not know that you can be perfectly legally in this country and NOT be able to have a SSN.

Hi all thank you so much for all the help. I have checked all the links and found out its is really difficult to get a place when I am not there in person. checked at Marriott etc and no rooms available for when I am coming. (28 or 29th of feb) GREAT start :-( So my question now is how do I get hold on furnished apartments except from the links suggested because they say furnished in their advertisement but when I call they say they never have any furnished. Also, when I am about to sign a leasing contract what should I look for? Like in regards to heating, insurance etc. many thanks as always.Read more: //www.city-data.com/forum/maryl...#ixzz0eO4qYFTE

sorry again. Here is another question. i am trying to get my head around the tax system and it is not the easiet. Firstly I can participate in my companies medical and dental iinsurance and 401K. So how much tax is deductet if you consider these? Are they seen as benefits or so?
Reason is, i still don't know how much I will get weekly after tax. So the quest are:
- My salary is around 60 000 something yearly. How much will I get after all the reductions incl. tax?
- How much is the utility bills usually for a singel person (stupid question sorry) just approximate for internet, electricity, water. Anything else I should add?
- I have to buy a car to use when travelling in work. Is there anything I should consider in regards to costs, tax etc? I will get my costs back from my employer end of each month etc. Also the travelling is the entire USA and not just MD and if longer trips I will use public transport. So is any of these costs deductable?
- How much does car insurance usually end up at?
- When getting MD driver licence, do I have to return my EU licence?
- I know people say MD is a expensive state, so can someone inform me a bit about costs like, gas, public transport costs etc.

Sorry for this but you guys have been such help that I just come here when I need help.
again many thanks in advance

Definitely not. You don't even need it to get a license here.

A 401k allows you to put pretax (not taxed) money away, usually up to (I think) 15% of your salary. There is also a monetary cap of something like $15,000. This money is not counted when calculating taxable income.
The fees for medical/dental insurance coverage will probably not be relevant for calculating taxes, as total medical/etc expenses have to excede a certain limit before they come into play.

Here's what will be deducted (for taxes)
-Federal Income tax- figure about 20%
-State Income tax-approx 5%
-FICA (aka Social Security) approx 7.5 %
-Medicare approx 1%

The medical and dental plans vary, so I'd have to guess at about $200/month for both (90% medical, 10% dental).

All numbers are approximate, and on a per month basis
Internet-$50
phone-$50
Cable TV $50
(but you can get all 3 bundled together for about $100)
electricity varies by the season, high in summer low in winter (assuming your heat source is something other than electricity). For a small appartment, I would budget about $100 for electricity.
Water is generally billed by quarter (every 3 months) and would run about $25-40/month
Heat (Natural gas/propane) would be low in spring/summer fall (less than $50/month), and maybe $250 or more in the very coldest months (Dec/Jan/Feb)

Maryland charges a flat 5 or 6% fee on registering your car, based on the value of the car, plus tags (about $50)
Yes, the tax on the car based on "value" is deductable, but unless your planning on getting a Mazzerati, it will probably not be enough to affect income tax deductions.
(although, it may, cause cost of moving to a new job location IS deductable...so.....could be anything is possible)
Cost of travel can be deducted if you are travelling to a place "not your normal work site".

Cost of auto insurance...Depends on age/gender and history. An 18yr old male will pay about $100/month, after about age 23, rates go down drastically. Women pay less.

Gas-currently $2.55/gallon
Public transport (DC Metro)-Probably $2-4 to get where your going.

I'm not a tax lawyer, so with all the above answers should be handled with appropriate caution. American tax law can be....interesting...at times.
Make friends with someone who understands it well, and save all receipts, on everything.

Uh, the USA doesnt have a national public transport system. The closest thing is Amtrak for rail and Greyhound bus but neither gets you places any time fast for the most part except in certain small corridors. Airlines serve most cities but sometimes you will need to make connections and some cities do not have a lot of cost effective transportation options other than an expensive cab ride. If you have to travel the entire USA for work than I would budget for flight and destination transport costs like cab and rental car. Unlike the UK and Europe, even our cheap airlines do not normally have fares like the lowest on EasyJet and Ryanair and many low fare airlines only serve major markets where they can get more volume of passengers so this leaves the big boys with a monopoly in many smaller and mid-sized markets that they love to exploit. Being in Germantown, you have the choice of Southwest at BWI for some destinations that can get you places relatively inexpensively about 99-200 USD one way is the norm for most places though if you book early enough 49 one way to short haul like New York is possible. You could always drive but if your travel is for the entire country, driving is very long. Germantown, MD to NYC would be 4.5-5 hours one way depending on traffic. Rail is 2.5 hours from Union Station in downtown DC on the Acela, which costs quite a bit, or 3 hours on the regional trains (it is about 45 minutes to 1 hour to get from Germantown to DC). Outside of that corridor, rail travel in the US is pretty poor. Most public transport is very localized and many cities have basically no public transport that is usable unless you arent on a schedule.
