When I moved here from NY and got a MD drivers license, my MD insurance company told me that I had to register my car within 60 days or my insurance would not cover me if I got in an accident. I don't think there is a way to get out of it. Everyone knows it sucks when transferring a car to MD.

I think you're stuck...MD law says 60 days, and your driver's license proves that you waited longer than 60 days. They aren't going to care if you were working temp or not, since you went ahead and did the license. When I moved from Ohio, I had to renew my license and registration the month before the move. I waited until the registration almost expired before getting both done in MD. They never questioned that I was there for over 60 days.
Sorry, I agree it sucks! Maybe contact someone higher up?

I don't see the connection between the 60 days and the tax. Those are two separate things. Where does the law state that the punishment for going beyond 60 days is paying the tax? If they are saying you were resident in Maryland so you have to pay here then try getting it refunded in New Jersey. Hoever, if you can prove what you stated then you need to try going to a higher up in the MVA to fight it. I don't know who, or how though. I remember moving to Maryland in 99 and Maryland trying to say I lived there through 1998 (I lived in Alexandria, VA in 1998). Ii had to fight the Comptroller to prove I did not live in Maryland. I was successful. That was taxes though, but it's worth trying to fight the MVA on this.

You might try contacting your state representative and see if they can help you out. Sometimes they can cut through the red tape and they may be willing to fight for you.

Their website explains it...you may get a discount if you comply with the 60 days, and could incur a fine if it's over 60 days. I moved to MD from Ohio in 1999 with a 1995 vehicle still with a loan, and only paid $100 in taxes.

Thanks for the link! Here's the first paragraph:

As a new resident of Maryland you must register your vehicle within 60 days of moving to Maryland. If you delay beyond 60 days, you will not be eligible for a tax credit for any titling tax paid in another state, and you may be subject to a citation for an out of state registration.
To the OP:So you need to prove you were not resident in this state prior to 60 days. If you can't then you're stuck. I hate the way MD works sometimes.

You're welcome! MD does love to take money from it's residents...and really, 60 days isn't that long, considering how complicated moving can be.
