Hello everyone.
I live on the eastern shore of Maryland. I would like to buy some land in the mountains. I have read that the higher you go NO BUGS, very important to my wife.
I would like 10 or more acres, hopefully on top of a mountain.
I'm open to Western Maryland PA VA.
This would be a weekend get away. I would like to first camp and then later build a small cabin.
Any input would be great.

Elevation itself has little impact on the amount of bugs, at least in Maryland. Proximity to water does. The closer to water, be it a river, stream, or mountain bog, the more bugs. Nearly all of the mountains are covered in forest, bugs live in the forest. Expect lots of them if you camp or spend time outside there.

I read on here that some folks that live in "Holiday" NC at 5000 ft in the mountains have no to little bug problems. I don't mind bugs. Maybe it was mosquitoes.

The highest point in MD is 3300 ft above sea level. Much of the land this high up is moist due to poor drainage and a wet climate, bugs and skeeters abound.

So should I look in VW or PA for a higher elevation. Any ideas on nice mountainous areas?

Take a weekend trip to Harper's Ferry, WV, and see how that appeals to you. It can be touristy -- I haven't been for years but used to like to visit when I lived in D.C. -- but there's enough national and state park land around it that you should be able to find something that is off the beaten track.
It is easy to get to.

Funny I was just looking on a map for Harper's Ferry prior to opening this web page. The elevation is around 500 ft above sea level. I really would like something 4000 ft. I am going to take a trip tomorrow to HF just to do the touristy thing.

I think WV has higher elevation, out near Canaan Valley and down toward Snowshoe Resort. I would look there. Western PA is pretty as well, so is Western MD. If you want to really move to the mountains, I would begin my search west of Hancock in Washington County. Everything East is just a "hill".

Here is a similar thread on the NC forum. The general jist is that there are bugs in the mountains anywhere on the east coast.

The highest elevation in PA is just over 3000 ft. WV and VA both have areas over 4000 ft. Understand though that once you get that high you are in some pretty extreme places. Constant wind, cold microclimate, remote locations. Probably not a place for beginners.

The best advice I can give you is to figure out what you want in your vacation home. Are you a someone that wants the land for outside pursuits like hiking, hunting, fishing, or someone that just wants to a quite place with a nice view? Do you like being the woods? Do you want to use it year round? If so do you have a 4wd vehicle to get up (or down) a mountain in winter? I would suggest coming to Allegany or Garrett County in the summer and rent a cabin for a weekend and see if you like it.

Thanks Westsideboy, I have a FJ and I would like to have a year round place to get away on the weekends. I would like a view, something that is a little away from everyone else. I enjoy hiking, kayaking, and shooting. The elevation and being some what secluded is a little desirable for another hobby of mine, astronomy. The only problem with Deep Creek is that it is 4 and 1/2 hours away.
I did go today to Harper's Ferry, very nice and 2 hours away. I loved the water, I didn't Kayak though. I drove up some of the mountain roads outside of town. Still a little to many houses, great views through.
Does any one have any recommendation for cabin rentals in other locations?
