I am relocating my family from NJ to Florida in June. We are traveling in two cars. Two adults, two children, two cats and one dog. Originally I was hoping to begin our journey by leaving NJ in the wee hours of the morning and hoping to get as far as North Carolina. Unfortunately we cannot leave until approximately four p.m. so I thought Maryland would be a good place to stop for the first night and start out early the next day. I would like to get as far South as possible on 95 before I would start to hit rush hour, inner harbour traffic near Baltimore, and I certainly do not need to pay Baltimore hotel rates. Can anyone recommend a good place to stop, that is close to 95. At first I thought Edgewood but can't I get a little further south then that before Baltimore? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

If you're leaving NJ at 4, you should be okay to get through Baltimore traffic, as much of it is headed in the opposite direction. Wilmington area traffic will likely be more of an issue than Baltimore, especially south on 95. Beach traffic can also be a factor in Delaware. In Baltimore, the wild card can be an Orioles game, however, so I'd check the schedule. You can always take the Harbor Tunnel to avoid Baltimore City issues.

Many of the suite chains will have a pet policy, though it's generally per hotel. In Columbia, there is a Homewood Suites and an Staybridge, both of which have pet-friendly policies. Candlewood also is pet-friendly, but the closest one to your early route is in Bel Air-Edgewood.

Choice Hotels also has some pet-friendly locations, and the Comfort Suites in Laurel would be worth checking, since it's close to your route and far enough from the cities that you're not going to pay the higher rates in Baltimore or DC. I just checked their website, since I knew of some of their hotels by BWI, convenient to I-95, and the Comfort Suites BWI does accept pets. If you use the search feature, you will get a paw print icon at properties that accept pets with Choice. And, they have a route feature that lets you plot your route, which tells you what properties are nearby, and then you can check for the paw print. Choice Hotels International

The main issue with rush hour traffic, if you're leaving on a weekday, is going to be Washington traffic, since it's no piece of cake to get around town and to 95 South in Virginia. If it's a summer Friday, this can be a terrible trip, with all the beach traffic headed to Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks. If you were to leave Columbia around 5:30-6am, you should escape the worst of DC traffic, which is going to be the Suburban Maryland traffic around to Tysons Corner in Virginia, or across the Wilson Bridge, depending upon your route. During rush hour, this will be a reverse commute, once you reach the Springfield area of Fairfax County, headed south on 95.

Good luck with the move!
