I'm having a housewarming party in June, and I'm looking to buy a bushel or two of Maryland blue crabs for the guests. I've only found a couple of places that seem to sell them (that I can find online, anyway). If anyone has some ideas about where would be the best place to buy them, I'd love some input.

I don't mind driving down to the Eastern Shore to get them, as a matter of fact I think I'd prefer to get them there, as I think the prices might be a bit cheaper. I tried Whitey Schmidt's website/books, but I wasn't able to find a list of any of the smaller crab houses that I know he goes to.

Any ideas? Thanks.

The best crabs I get locally are from Lady Francis Crabhouse on Back River Neck Road in Essex. Otherwise there is a guy who sells them on Rt. 50 in Easton cheap if you plan to steam them yourself and don't mind the drive (always large and heavy).

I agree - the ones from Lady Francis are great. We also got really good ones last year from Vince's Crab House in Middle River on Compass Road. Not huge but very heavy and not a bad one in the lot.

Casey's Crab House on 198 between Laurel and Fort Meade
Bottom of the Bay on Route 1 in Laurel

It really shouldn't be too hard to find a place to buy crabs in Maryland.

Crabs are free, it all depends on where you sleep.

Depends on where you are located. If you are anywhere near DC try Jesse Taylor's at the wharf (ask for extra seasoning), the trip is an experience in itself. But bring some nose plugs, it is not only ripe with character but also with the smell of fresh fish. Enjoy your party!
