Hi,

I have a possible job opportunity in Hagerstown MD and I am really looking for some information.

If you could answer any of these questions I would GREATLY appreciate it as I'm currently very nervous about the possibility of leaving NY.

1. Is Hagerstown a safe area for someone who is a young single female? I know this may sound strange but it will be the first time I will be living on my own.

2. Can you live comfortably there on a salary of $48,000?

3. What types of activities does Hagerstown offer?

4. Is it relatively convinient to all forms of shopping (food, clothing etc) and entertainment (movie theatre etc)?

5. Would you consider the people to be friendly?

6. I am a champion equestrian. Are there any professional eventing barns?

thank you so much for your time!! I would really appreciate any input!

Question 1 & 2 - the answer is yes. Housing prices have dropped, so if you want to buy, now is a great time. Both new construction and older homes are available.

Question 3 - Lots of stuff, from outdoors recreation in and around the immediate area to history to the arts. They had "taste of the arts" downtown last weekend, MayMart market, the farmers market every Saturday morning downtown. There is a symphony orchestra, theater with a variety of acts, etc. Skiing, hiking, biking opportunities are close by.

Question 4 - Hagerstown is a shopping destination for people in the area. Many chain and speciality stores. The outlets are a huge draw and have tons of stores. The mall is good as well.

Question 5 - Yes, the people are friendly. I'm sure your neighbors will welcome you and help/support you any way you need.

Question 6 - Don't know for sure. Do know there are horse farms around, and a friend of a friend has a horse she keeps on a farm south of town. Washington County Ag Center would be a good place to call to find out, they may be able to help you.

1. Yes, Hagerstown would be safe for a single female. The area immediately downtown is a higher crime area (but nothing comparable to other areas of the state) and nearly everywhere else in the county is low crime.

2. Yes, you can live well on 48K, you will be able to have a middle class existence.

3. Lots of outdoor activities, hiking, biking, mountains are within a short drive. Hagerstown has some artsy, cultural stuff too, but I don't know the specifics.

4. Hagerstown is the central city for a large rural area and has lots of shopping, dining, etc. Frederick, 25 miles east has even more

5. I would think so. It is a mix of locals with some newcomer-commuter types. But overall it is still a "small town" kind of place where people know their neighbors.

6. Maryland is a big horse state. Washington County is not known for horses as much as say Baltimore, Frederick, or Howard Counties, but you should have no problem finding what you are looking for.

I can't really think of many cons, but I like living in the "country", so to speak, so life here suits me.

To me, everything I want is here or nearby. You need to understand Hagerstown is not DC or Baltimore. You will not find the variety of things like bars, restaurants, shopping, etc you would find there, but for a town this size, there is surprisingly quite a lot. Still, when you do need something you can't find around here, Balto and DC are an hour or so away.
