Hello everybody! Pretty soon I'll be moving to Maryland as a Special Educator. I am also thinking on bringing my family as I live overseas. I am reading all the posts here and it seems that it is very expensive to live there. Can someone tell me how much is deducted from a teacher's salary of around $5000monthly...and if what is left is enough to support 3 children ages 3-15? I am a single mother.

Depends on where you are living.
Anything east of Hagerstown, MD can cost an arm and a leg.
Maryland is very high tax and high cost of living.
The key also is a good school system. If you want a good school system, then expect to pay a hefty fee for the zip code.

I am also a teacher. First of all if you've been offered a contract making $5,000, you must walk on water. As for taxes. I do not know if Maryland has a state income tax. If they do, you can expect to pay federal and state income taxes. You will also be required to contribute to the teacher's retirement system. the amount is set by the state. There is also insurance to pay for. And in my opinion insurance carriers prey on teachers like piranha. There's medical, dental, long term care, disability, cancer, etc. It's not required but you don't want to be underinsured. You will also want to belong to a professional association in your state. One of the benefits of belonging is legal representation if you ever need it. I've always said teachers make a decent wage, (albiet on the low end of decent) But it's the taxes and deductions that keep us shopping in the discount aisle. Good Luck to you.

State income tax runs about 4.75%, plus a per county tax added to it, which brings the average to 7%. This is on top of your federal income tax. You also have to contribute 2% towards your retirement. I am currently in Florida, thinking about moving to Maryland (also a teacher). In Florida, they do not pay as much, but I do not have to contribute towards my retirement, and there is no state income tax. Things to consider...
