My 2.5 year old loves trains. Are there any switching yards around where we can go sit and watch?

Palmer Mass is a great place for this. Get something to eat in the depot and watch the switching: http://www.steamingtender.com/

You should take him down to the Northeast corridor in Kingston,RI or Mansfield,MA the 2, 150mph zones.... Trains come every 10-20mins...there are some freight and train switching depending on the time of day... The Kingston Station has the Rhode Island Railroad Museum housed in the building. I heard its worth a small day trip....the High Speed Trains and Amtrak crews stopping by on Regional Trains should keep you entertained for at several hours...
