Some interesting news has come about for a New line through Western Mass connecting Connecticut and Southern Vermont. It could bring a spark back to a dying part of New England.

Conn. mayor wants to upgrade train rail to Brattleboro - Brattleboro Reformer

Great stuff here, Nexis. You're a wealth of info on this subject. It would be great to see these projects come through, and to see W. Mass. get an economic boost. Thanks for keeping us informed about this.

I don't feel that the rail systems can support themselves, the burden will lie on the backs of the tax payers.

That depends on what Mass wants to do , New England states seem to always find sources for projects. Hopefully they can find more reliable sources....the current ones aren't really working in any NE state. Theres an Estimated 73 Billion $$ backlog of Transit / Road projects in the NE....

Nah , i'm just a Rail / Transit fanner....but future wise i will be working somewhere in the Transit industry....of course there not hiring now.... Neither do roads and yet no one complains its funny how that always happens....Rail can bring a Economic Stimulus to local towns and businesses and revive dying regions.

Nexis...how old are you? I am a HUGE transit fan myself, and with the details of this thread, I thought you might be a current planner/researcher. I am trying hard to get into this field and wondered if you had any tips/connections.

Second....rail systems cannot support themselves as currently constructed in the transportation system.
Why? Too inconvenient. We are accustomed to driving and the communities we live/work/shop in are unfortunately designed for this mode.
I very much would like to see mass transit expanded (commuter/high speed and rails like connecting north and south station), but UNTIL the system as we know it changes (neighborhood design/ease of driving) mass transit will remain well behind cars.

I'm 20 , ah....i like Regional Rail and Urban Rail. I liked the Urban Rail system in Boston , but the regional Rail system was horrible....slow and old...and the stations were hard to find. I get the details form the fanners up there and some T Engineers.....aswell as blogs and personal research. The Original list is old and outdated.... I agree the systems in Western Mass cannot support themselves yet , i think once the New Haven - Springfield - Brattleboro line is completed things will change. That whole region will be introduced to faster / more frequent Rail services , aswell an expanded Bus service in or around Springfield. The Pittsfield line and Extensions of the Worcester and Fitchburg lines Westward will also have an impact on people's driving / Transit habits. Throw in some higher fuel prices , and bam.... medium usage levels will ensue.
