But I wouldn't call it a "dump", it's better than that.
Soon we will have four grocery stores in a city of a little over 20,000, we have 2 now a Hannafords and Stop & Shop...Hoping prices will go down for sure!

I will say, I hate the design of Price Chopper stores, they look really tacky. The new one is being built literally around the block from my house! Happy just because it was a really ugly lot before

Reviving this thread to say that the latest Consumer Reports has a review of supermarket chains, including regional ones. Top of the list were Wegman's and Trader Joe's, but Market Basket did pretty well, at about #7 out of 60 or so listings. People thought Hannaford and Whole foods were OK (Whole Foods noted as being expensive) but Stop & Shop and Shaw's were well down in the bottom half.

the one down in Putnam, Ct is a large newer store. I have seen the one in Webster and compared to Putnam it is a dump. We will soon ride up to Oxford to try that MB. We have been to the one in Bellingham which seems to be always busy.

Interesting! I refuse to shop in Shaw's and will only buy mass produced items (ex. Frosted Flakes) in S&S. Both chains have AWFUL meat and produce in my opinion. There's a TJ's practically a block from where I live but I don't see what's so wonderful about it. Everyone else seems to love TJ's but personally I don't see the allure.

A lot depends on what you like to eat, plus on particular branch. If you visit the Needham store, that one is one of the smallest, with less selection than other stores have. It also doesn't have wine section, like say Framingham branch does. You can save a lot buying wine at TJoes - same brands are sold for $3-7 more per bottle at liquor stores. Same goes for specialty foods and condiments which you may not personally buy, but they tend to be cheaper and better quality / selection than else where (soy sauce, vinegars, pickles, rice, ham, coffee etc). I'm not thrilled about every single product they carry, but there are quite a few things that I only buy there.

There also seems to be a difference, how much of specific products they have in stock in different branches. Coolidge corner location seems to get the most selection.
