I am looking for some general info on Stow, MA as a place to live. It seem's like a very nice, semi rural place, however can anyone add any input on overall feeling of the town? I.e. how is it for young families? I know it is a relatively quiet place with no town center however but is there much going on? Thanks!

It's a nice quiet town. You're right, there's no really well defined center, but it seems like there are a lot of community activities there and in the surrounding area.

Thank you! Does any one know how Stow would be for young families/young children? Are their opportunities to meet other similar folks for newcomers?

Also can anyone comment on the overall feeling of the town (laid back vs. snobby, conservative vs. liberal?).

There is a Mothers & More group that covers Stow: http://www.mothersandmoreassabetvalley.org/ You might want to give them a ring & talk with a member who lives in town.

Stow is an excellent town for families with young children. There is an active parent group with playgroups and activities (SAPN: Playgroups in the Stow Area Parents Network). There are at least 3 apple orchards/farms for fall family fun. There are sports leagues and other recreation activities, including swimming lessons on the lake in the summer, and day camp. The town has a website that lists the different recreation opportunities.

The schools are rated well, although the town is going through the process of building a new school, since the elementary buildings are outdated. I am not up to date on the status of this, so you might want to call the local school and find more out about it. The middle and high school for the town are shared with Bolton, and other towns.

I'd describe the town as a mix of older folks who have been in town for a long time, and a lot of new families drawn to the rural feel and excellent schools. It is pretty conservative for Massachusetts standards, and there is a snob factor from some of the people, but many are welcoming.

There are not a ton of restaurants in town, but there are a few places just a short drive away. The Stow Independent is the name of the local newspaper, if you want to get a feel for the town.

Everyone in Stow is happy. The men are strong and the women are good looking. The children are bright, the streams flow clean and the sun is always out. The mailman smiles, the Town Clerk knows your name and when it snows everyone goes out and clears the ways and paths. The bluebirds sing in the spring, the cows moo all summer and the apples are crisp in the fall.

Love it. "Lake Wobegon...where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average."
