Hi,

Me and my son are moving to Worcester.
Is there a good high school near Worcester State University or should my son go to a high school in Shrewsburry instead (or any other area)?

Thank you.

Shrewsbury has great schools. I would pick Shrewsbury HS over Worcester HS. Northborough and Westborough also have top rated school systems.

The high school near Worcester State is Doherty. You may also ant to check out the new Vocational Technical high School which has received a national rating for excellence.

Shrewsbury is a lot of hype...this is based on first-hand experience.

I've heard good things about Voke.

Even if you live in Worcester, school choice could be an option; depending on how far you want to drive him (or have him drive) to school, if there is an out-of-town school you're interested in, call and see if they offer school choice and ask if you can take a tour.

Thank you all for your replies.
My son does not drive. He has to take a bus to go to school. I am not knowledgeable about the tech vocational high school. He is in grade 11 (regular high school). Can graduates from tech high school go to the university/college? Do they have dual credits (get college credits while in high school)?

He may not be able to apply to Worcester Tech HS as he has missed a lot of "tech time" from 9th and 10th grade. The school has a very competitive admission process. Yes, graduates of WTHS go on to college/university and yes, WTHS, like all WPS high schools has a dual enrollment program. You might want to check out the school's website. Also, if you are thinking about school choice, you might want to check out Wachusett Regional HS.
