Hi,

We are thinking of Worcester and nearby towns (renting for now). I work in Groton, CT and my wife works in Wakefield, MA. We don't have any kids yet.

Any ideas on the daily commute from Worcester to Groton (I-395, ~80 miles)? I have heard that 395 is relatively faster than 95 (through RI). I would like to know if it's possible to do it every day and what's the average commutue times.

How long does it take from Worcester to Wakefield (Mass Pike and 95 N, ~55 miles)? Is the Mass pike/95 intersection bad in the morning rush hour? Are there any alternative routes to reach Wakefield, MA from towns south of Boston?

Thanks.

I can't imagine trying to commute from Worcester to Wakefield although I am surprised to see that Google maps says it's only 1 hour 5 minutes via the Mass Pike and 128 (what you call 95 - technically correct but nobody calls it that). My guess is that taking the Pike all the way into Boston and then going north on 93 would be a better choice, but I really don't know. I do know someone who commutes from Worcester to Medford - not sure her exact route but I don't think she would attempt to use 128.

Worcester? That would make for a lousy commute for both of you!

Google maps tells me that it is 120 miles from Wakefield to Groton. The commute north up 128 to Wakefield would definitely be worse than the commute south along 95 to Groton. Consequently, I would suggest looking at places to live around Walpole, Sharon or Norwood. That would be 80 miles to Groton and 40 miles to Wakefield; still an ugly commute but better than Worcester, by far.

Default staying closer to rt 128 better?

Thanks for your helpful replies.

Thomas144 - I too am worried about the commute from Worcester to Wakefield. It will be great to find out how long it takes drive to Medford from Worcester.

gf2020 - I like your idea about Walpole/Sharon/Norwood. As you said it's still going to be one heck of a commute for both of us. But the added advantage will be the proximity to Rt 128 Amtrak Station that gives me options to reach Groton/New London by train once in a while.

Hope the rental apartment/house will be easy to find in those towns.

I live in Sharon. THere are almost no rentals, but the drive to Groton is easy. I do it daily. The train thing didn't work out for me, so I just commute down. Let me know if you move close and we can carpool - my gas bill is killing me!
