Hi, can anyone recommend a good mortgage broker in the greater Boston area? I am a first time home buyer.

I'd start with whomever you bank with. If you have your accounts with Citizens, Bank of America, etc., just walk into a branch.

You should also try some of the local banks (i.e., Brookline Bank, Watertown Savings, etc.) They tend to have good rates if you're well qualified (they may want you to open an account with them).

Also, your real estate agent can provide you with a list of names (whether brokers or direct lenders) of people he/she has worked with in the past.

Use bankrate.com to get a list of rates offered by each of the different companies. Choose the lowest and contact them

I guess it depends a lot on who your realtor is and what kind of loan you are doing. We just bought a house in MA from out of state and decide to use REDFIN rather than a traditional realtor (for us, most realtors focused on one particular area and we wanted to cover a much broader selection of towns. Redfin was great for that, but you have to be up for doing your own property research-not so hard in today's internet market.) Anyway, through them we checked out a couple of their "recommended" brokers. I chose Marcus Sohn and Leader Bank. I've been very pleased as he is on top of things, responds to email or phone very quickly, and has really kept our mortgage moving through, even with the few hiccups that have happened. Anyway, he has been great for us.

Go to your neighborhood bank and see what they can provide for you.
