I would also suggest doing this.

Look, Unless you're going to stay right at the stadium (Renaissance Hotel- pricey), you're probably better off taking the train from Boston. Traffic to/from the stadium is a nightmare, so even if you stay at a motel that's 5 miles from the stadium, you can expect to sit in 45 minutes of traffic (at least) either way before and after the game. With the train, you get on and go. It may be crowded, but there's no waiting in idling traffic. What's more, is you can have a few drinks (show up early and join a tailgate party) because you have a designated driver (his name is "Conductor") should you choose to do so. In Boston, you'll have an incredible array of restaurants and bars to choose from as well. In Boston, staying close to South Station or Back Bay station can make the commute even easier.

This also applies for Providence. Providence has commuter rail service to the stadium on game days (it's actually a little closer than Boston) too. Providence is also a bit cheaper than Boston and still offers a lot to do and a lot nearby. In Providence, any downtown hotel (Weston, Hilton, Biltmore, etc) will be within walking distance to the Providence Railroad Station which is across from the State House and Providence Place Mall.

As for the train, you can actually take it from many stops between Boston and Providence too, so you don't need to stay in the cities to take the train. I know that you can take it from Mansfield to the game too and some of the hotels I mentioned are in Mansfield and would be significantly cheaper than a night in Boston.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I think I'm going to stick with places that are near the stadium. They'll be driving from the Albany area and will most likely have to leave first thing in the morning on Monday, so the less they have to drive back home the better. The various nearby Holiday Inns look like they're just what I'm looking for.

An optimist who thinks they'll have worked things out and will be playing in August. Hope you're right!

There's a Four Points Sheraton on Route 1 in Norwood. They have a bar/restaurant as I recall. There are a couple of other hotels and restaurants right near it. It's about 7 or 8 miles from the stadium. Without game traffic, 15 minutes. With game traffic, 2 hours to get out of Gillette and then 15 minutes.
