Hey Everyone,

I'm starting a job in Providence, RI next month and looking for places to live. I'm definitely looking to keep the commute under 30minutes. We are looking to rent for now. Does anyone have any suggestions for places to live in MA that would put me within that range?

Thanks.

Are you sure you want to live in MA? Providence itself is a fun city. I'd much rather live in Providence itself than any of the towns in MA that are a 30 minute drive from it!

Agreed. Any reason you want to live in MA over RI?

No reason, just looking for opinions. I haven't even been to the area yet, but I'm coming up this weekend to start looking at places around Providence. I was just wondering if I should expand my search to include some of the bordering towns in MA.

The main advantage MA has is lower property taxes but you are renting so that shouldn't matter. Also consider insurance and car taxes which also tend to go higher in RI. Do you have kids in school?

In MA I would look at N. Attleborough as a good town with decent rentals. Seekonk and Rehoboth are nice as well but tend to not have much for rent. Attleboro isn't the worst place but it is a city so you have "those elements", but still nothing like Providence or Pawtucket. Avoid Central Falls like a plague.

In RI, check out East Providence (especially Rumford and even parts of Riverside if you want to be near water). Close proximity for a commute and still close to amenities, etc. Plus, most of the neighborhoods have nearby parks and good sidewalks for walking in general.

In MA, I agree with Seekonk and Attleboro.

Ditto this.

In most of the East Side (not to be confused with East Providence, a separate municipality) you'll find safe rentals and good neighborhoods. Federal Hill is cool, but has "fringe" areas so a little research helps. Elmhurst near PC is pretty nice too. Pawtucket is largely blue collar, but you'd be amazed at what you can find. Darlington is nice, and most of the area along East Ave (which turns into Hope Street in PVD) is great.

East Providence, Warwick and Cranston will all have decent rentals too. Many of the neighborhoods are more working class, but there are plenty of nice, old suburban areas.

If you MUST live outside of PVD, you can find decent stuff in Attleboro, good stuff in North Attleboro and if you can find anything in Rehoboth, it'll be nice. Fall River will have a ton of rentals, but unless its in the Highlands, it's going to either be a little gritty (worse, perhaps) or out of the way for a Providence commute.

I'd go with Providence.
