It's hard to say without knowing whether you have a particular location you'd have to be near for work purposes, what kind of home you want (size, rental or purchase), your budget, etc.

Coastal towns in Mass. tend to be expensive. Generally speaking, the farther from Boston the more affordable. For example, the South Coast towns like Westport and Dartmouth are far cheaper than towns like Hingham and Cohasset, and far less snooty. But it would be VERY difficult to commute from there to Boston every day.

Along the South Shore, Marshfield and Plymouth are more afforable than the others. Along the North Shore, it's a bit cheaper right near New Hampshire (again, far from Boston). Otherwise, Winthrop, Nahant and Swampscott might be a bit more affordable (but they're not cheap and they're all a bit isolated). Salem has some more affordable residences but there are some shadier areas and the schools are not as highly rated as those in neighboring towns.

Consider western mass! No coast line, but we do have the CT river!

Its a great place to raise kids, lots of open land, organic-farming, excellent schools, etc.

Will you need access to Boston for jobs? If not then I recommend some of the Cape Cod towns, abundant coastline, inexpensive homes and pretty much safe. The Cape is an expensive place to rent during the summer vacation months but it's not so expensive to purchase there.

People who live on the Cape do love it, ESPECIALLY in the winter when the tourists are gone. I just moved to South Coast myself, and the towns here are gorgeous (some of them), but I feel like it could get lonely if you're by yourself. Better with family. Dartmouth, Westport are more affordable. Marion, Mattapoisett a little more expensive (and nicer). Stay away from New Bedford, for the most part, to live at least, but I hear some great restaurants and bars are there. Haven't explored yet.

I like Newburyport up North, about an hour from Boston. I know some people who live in Swampscott, and it's actually fairly affordable, and really pretty along the coast. commuting from North Shore into Boston though is incredibly painful.

good luck
