Hi Everyone,

I currently rent in E. Longmeadow however I will be hopefully buying a place this coming spring/summer. I have thought about staying in E. Longmeadow- great schools, affordable homes and it's relatively walkable. However lately I've been considering moving farther north and possibly buying Northampton, Hadley or Amherst. What are some of the differences between these places and E. Longmeadow? Which area would consider better for a single mother with two young kids who will be starting school soon? My son is also autistic so I really need a school system that has a good support system for this...

Thanks!

If you are comfortable in E. Longmeadow, why not stay there? Where will you be working? I think there is a much different vibe in the Amherst-Northampton area - more hippie/crunchy/artsy, less suburban. Of course, you will probably find higher house prices here.

I think you will find Northampton the most walkable, plus bike paths, YMCA, Look Park makes it good for kids. Expect to pay high property taxes if you buy in Amherst; Hadley probably has the lowest. All these towns have good schools, but Amherst and Northampton might have more resources for your son, since they are larger communities.

Yeah I'm leaning towards staying here. I just think that the Northampton/Amherst area might have more for singles than E. Longmeadow. But I was just looking at real estate up there and it's a little bit more then I would like to spend. Even if I did buy a home up there I wouldn't have any extra $$ to go out any way :/

From what I've heard the schools aren't as good in Easthampton which is probably why it's a little more affordable than Northampton, Hadley or Amherst.
