To historians with knowledge of Salem area :

Anyone direct me to where I can get infor for serious tour of Salem and environs? I do not want to get caught up in the abominations that apparently exist in salem as part of the tourist witch craze (read local gov revenue and local business profit craze)?

Frinstance, like maps of where things really occured there in the Witch trials (religous bigots oppressing innocents (like also the Native Americans) rationalized on the basis of emotionally disturbed Euro females acting badly). Or where in Salem real research could be conducted?

I am an amateur historian of pre-revolution North America (sometimes I do research for authors) . I understand people gotta have a good time but I hate to see the past places of value run over by the present want to make money...say like Fort Ticonderoga in NYS or Manassas Battlefield in Northern VA.

I am not disputing other people's beliefs in the supernatural or spiritual.....have had too many of my own unexplainable experiences traveling and doing research in historic places to judge anyone else.

I know there are folks out there who know "where the essence, not the fluff " lies. I hope you read this and assist me. All the books I have read explain what happened, but these are not original sources and seldom have maps.

My direct email: bdoon51@gmail.com

Thanks

bdoon

The Salem History Society

Well if you know anything about Salem at all, you'd know that Salem was originally located what is now Danvers. The only structure that still stands is Rebecca Nurse's house, and that would be in Danvers. After all the hype died down from the Witch Trials, they moved the town to where it sits now.

Admittedly I do not know that much about Salem. How do they move a whole town? Does the place of execution still exist...Gallows Hill?

Thanks
