My son commutes from Waltham to Burlington in the AM around 8:30 and back in the PM around 5:30. His morning commute is a breeze going northbound? on 128. He wonders why the return trip is always bad in the afternoon, whether he takes 128 or goes back roads through Lexington. It does seem like the PM traffic should have its morning counterpart, but we can't think of the reason...any ideas?

Does your son leave or arrive at 8:30? If he isn't leaving until 8:30, he's avoiding the morning rush hour. (Most people have to be at work by 8 or 8:30, rather than 9, these days.)

Default Commute time

Yes he does arrive at 9:00, and leaves around 8:15 or 8:30 from Waltham. I never thought of that possibility. I guess if he ever goes in earlier, he will find out!

I also live in Waltham and am at a loss for this, I think in the morning b/c Waltham and the Pike are such a commuter terminus in themselves that you see tons of traffic from both sides coming to Waltham, so going North from Waltham to Burlington is empty and going South from Waltham is empty.

I have no experience with the PM commute but in the AM if I have gone somewhere north easily and breezily from Waltham (the other day I had to go to Reading for example, and one day Swampscott) even at 10am I cannot get home b/c the traffic going south is still bumper to bumper and I have to take the back roads all the way.

Interesting....my son says he has left Burlington as late as 6:30 and the traffic going south as well as the back roads are all jammed. Maybe it's just people heading to Boston to do things? I grew up in NYC and it's pretty normal for westbound traffic from Long Island to be nearly always busy, no matter what time of day.
