We found a nice summer house to buy in Wareham, Ma. Beaches seem nice and plenty of places for boating. In researching the area we found the crime rate to be quite high. Is this the reason for the lower house prices in this beach community? Are there good and bad areas in Wareham? We are looking for a nice place for a family.
Any help would be appreciated.

If you wish a summer home look over the bridge, water is warmer,
Yarmouth is ok and maybe Dennis which has a great beach.

Wareham is viewed as a very depressed community by people living in the area and on the Cape -- and yes, that is why the prices are low -- the school system does not have a good reputation either. Wareham has many mobile home parks, lots of transients and "welfare" motels which is very sad, but it is what it is and it's in Wareham.... You need to actually go over the bridge to get a good deal and near beaches.... Falmouth is a great town, but prices are definitley higher....

I bought a foreclosure in East Wareham three years ago. I did not do my research at the time. I found out after moving in. Like all towns there is good and bad. Yes, There is a high crime rate. Due mostly to the depressed economy here. Like all Cape towns i have found out by living here. The people rely on tourism. The economy for most is seasonal. But having said all this Wareham was featured on chronicle as an up and booming town to live. People are buying because it is affordable. The economy is improving as more people buy and move into the town the economy shall grow.

There was recently a "sweep" done by police in an effort to cut down on crime and send a message to perpetrators it won't be tolerated. In recent weeks there have been some well publicized violent crimes and going out on a limb, I think it is gang related- most definitely drug related.
