We currently have natural gas that is very affordable. We are moving to a larger, older house that has oil heat and I am paranoid it's going to cost an arm and a leg!

The new house is 2600 SF, windows new in the last 7 years. I'm not 100% sure about the insulation in the walls but the attic has decent insulation. Basement is unfinished, but also unheated so no real issue there.

I'd love it if you could give me your average monthly or yearly oil usage. I've searched online for the prices and they're all about $3.40/gallon.

Recommendations for an oil service in Metrowest would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I have a 1,600 sq foot cape built in 1948 with newer windows. I have steam radiators and a brand new boiler and keep the house at 64 when home and 58 at night/when gone. Although when I'm home I use the wood stove so the heat doesn't kick on a ton. I'd say I spend about $2,400 a year on oil.

I would suggest you research yelp. People write reviews about different companies, and all companies have some good offers going for NEW clients, offers change, and many people switch again and yet again to another company to take advantage of the new client special. Make sure you read the fine print, especially when the offer sounds too good to pass up. if you like a company based on yelp, call them up and ask if they service your town. Sometimes the review says they do, but when you call them they say they don't anymore.
Most likely you will get fliers in your mail, with local companies promoting new client specials. Check them out. My opinion is that they all are kind of the same, with certain differences, and these differences might matter to one person, and not to the other.

Also, check with utility company if you can convert to gas (if there's gas on your street). You'll save money that way.

If you're really concerned I would get in contact with Mass Save and have them come to your house for a free energy audit. They'll show you how you can cut down your oil and electrical use. Plus they can educate you on all the current rebates and incentives available. In the end, your house will be more energy efficient and you'll pay less to heat it.

We have a 2300 sq ft cape, 4 br, 2 ba, built in 1953. New windows but very little insulation and an old boiler. We use about 1200 gallons of oil per year.

Yikes, 1200 gallons/year at around $3.40 is over $4000!

Thanks for the tips everyone. Unfortunately there is no gas on the street or we'd do the conversion for sure. We have two small kids so keeping the house too cool isn't much of an option. Hopefully we have another mild winter.

I will definitely check out Yelp and also talk to the neighbors. Our sellers are throwing us a "welcome to the neighborhood" party on Sunday - have you ever heard of such nice sellers?

Thanks again!
