Does anyone know where one can buy cheap lobster (even soft shell ones) somewhere between New Bedford and Woods Hole? I make the trip back and forth weekly, was hoping to get them cheaply directly from the lobsterman any place between say Fall River, New Bedford, Falmouth, Woods Hole.

Yeah... Westport Point. Basically, it's at the very southern end of Main Road in Westport in the little village there. Lobster is cheap everywhere now, so I don't know how prices compare currently. He's been reasonable when I've been. Since there's no website or address, the best way to get to him is to take Rt. 88 South all the way to the last light before the bridge (you'll see the bridge in front of you). Take a right at that light and your first left (at the stop sign... about 75 yards after you turn off of Rt. 88) onto Main Rd. Follow that to the end. You'll see a few wooden signs pointing the boat out.

Another GREAT place for lobster is the Fisherman's Market in New Bedford's South End. It's actually a retail store inside of a larger seafood processing building. It may not have the charm of getting lobster off the boat at a small dock in a quaint New England village, but it's essentially the same thing (with a much bigger selection). Their seafood is right from their boats. It doesn't go to the big seafood auctions and get distributed out to retailers. Not only does it mean their seafood is fresher, it means the cost is generally lower. They're great for lobster, but if you happen in there when they have George's Bank Scallops, large Day Boat Scallops, or fresh tuna, you'll think you've died and gone to heaven. Their fresh tuna isn't thawed from vacuum sealed bags like most grocery stores and seafood markets (even the high end ones). It's fresh. In fact, they have a big block of it, and you pick the size and location of the cut you want and they do it right in front of you. It's by far the best seafood market I've been to in New England.
