definitely read www.melrosemessage.com that jonnydeaf suggested, boy plenty of gossip material there.
one post :"With six administrators leaving, 1/3 of the teaching staff, and subpar test scores, the Melrose school system is in a serious state of crisis. " granted it is from last year but I am sure it didn't happen overnight.
now I am curious about other cities if they have blogs like that.

Wakefield has the same site, but NO ONE posts because people in Wakefield don't feel a need to justify their decision to live there.

Melrose has become the new destination for the Cambridge (then Somerville, then Arington) economic exiles. It has long been the stepping stone from Medford to Winchester, both literally and figuratively. Melrose-ians would like you to think that Melrose schools are good, which is a word-of-mouth legacy from the pre-MCAS, pre-internet days. The perception of Melrose schools as "good" and other towns with the same scores as "bad" continues to fuel an influx of new families and increased housing prices. Melrose is super-dense, has a charming downtown, lots of rental housing, two commuter rail stops (on the same line) and a bus to the orange line in Malden. If it's schools were that good it wouldn't be nearly as affordable as it is. It is a solidly middle-class community that would like to be more well regarded than it is.
