We are thinking of moving from the midwest to Bedford, MA area. We value above average schools, safe, clean, family oriented and small community feel. Would Bedford or somewhere within a 1/2 hour commute fit the bill? Also need high quality medical care.

It will fit what you are looking for. But, you need to figure out where will you work and what is your budget? This area is pricey, and commutes can be difficult if not very proactive with home location that will support reasonable commute to work.
You would need to tell us more to help you better.

Looking at work in Bedford at the VA. We do have a budget, as most do. We have young children. Would want a spacious yard, maybe even a country-like subdivision. The smaller the school size, the better. Are there wide open spaces to bike or trails?

Minuteman Bikeway - official website
Rail-Trails at Bedford Depot Park

Not sure about subdivisions. Many private school around if you need small class size or check Harvard and Stowe.
Hope it helps.

Arlington is the closest city with smaller schools, i think and they have some newer houses/condos....Lexington's schools are huge (at least high school)

If you are looking for private school, i would highly recommend Lexington Montessori School..I have two kids there and we LOVE it....Actually, my daughter's "buddy"(she is in 3rd grade and they each have a personal friend in K) is from Bedford...Her mom says it takes her about 15 minutes to get to school...

I've been looking in that vicinity lately, but I haven't actually looked at Bedford at all because I can't actually find anything substantial about the schools. I'd love to hear input on this from others...
