We are a Dutch/American family and are moving from London (UK) to the Boston area this summer. I am an artist/ teacher and my husband is a journalist who will work in Cambridge. We are trying to find the right balance of neighbourhood and good schools. Not looking for anything trendy and don't care about nightlife and such but hope to live in a neighbourhood that's not too suburban and boring.(In my dreams I'd live in a rambling Victorian porched house (under $1000.000)close to a charming neighbourhood centre with public transport and my kids attending a top public school) Family homes in Cambridge seem eyewateringly expensive and I was told the schoolsystem is in overhaul. Not sure if we're ready to foot the bill for private schools.(my son is 15 and daughter 10) Do people who can afford it always send their kids to a private schools? Or is a public school in for instance Belmont or Newton just as good?
I like what I've seen of Jamaica Plain, it seems less suburban, but not sure about the schools there.
Any thoughts or advice is much appreciated!
Gilberte
