Hello. Newton's taxes are high mainly because residents want them that way. Newton has horrific budget problems which hold it down in second tier status. Yes the taxes are high not sure how they compare to brookline.

RE taxes in Brookline are actually extremely reasonable. Right now they're $11.65/thousand but if you live in the property you get a residential exemption which lowers your annual tax bill by a little less than $2K.

Boston's tax rate is a bit higher at $13.14/thousand. Boston also has a residential exemption which their website states is:

The fiscal year residential exemption is 30% of the average value of all residential property in the City.

Newton's RE tax rate is $11.49/thousand but there is no residential exemption in Newton.
