My girlfriend and I are considering moving from Weymouth to Providence to be closer to my job. I work all the way in Cranston--she works in Braintree (right by the South Shore Plaza).
I really wanted to move closer to work because I've been commuting about 600 miles a week for the last 2 years. I'm ready for a quick commute and sick of spending 15 hours a week behind the wheel.
How long do you think it will typically take for my girlfriend to get to Braintree from Providence? I am looking at apartments that are downtown and right off the highway.
We are also considering places along the 295 corridor (North Providence, Cumberland, North Attleboro etc.) Does anyone have experience with the daily traffic along 295 at the 95 split? Will that save time? Trying to do the cost/benefit analysis between living in the suburbs and living in the city.
I lived in Cumberland for a couple of years and I commuted from there to Boston for a couple of months. The first day I drove it took me THREE hours. I wouldn't recommend moving to Providence and commuting to Braintree unless you work "off" hours (i.e. you commute outside of rush hour). I would strongly recommend looking at somewhere in between. The only problem is everything in between are pretty quiet towns. So, if you're not interested in quiet suburbs then it's a really tricky situation.
My best guess is she would be looking at around 90 minutes to get to Braintree depending on what time she needs to be there. There isn't a backup around 295, traffic tends to slow around 495, and then slow/ back up again where 95 hits 93/128 though more of the traffic goes toward 128N.
Of course that is all assuming there isn't any construction or rain or snow or major accidents. While Providence isn't big living downtown and having to travel through the city vs. living on the East Side and being able to get on 95 near the Pawtucket border would make a 15-25 minute difference in time despite only being a mile or two.
