firstly i just wanna say new bedford IS NOT a "big city" 90 some thousand people is not that much when you think of cities. those girls that did that to you were probably young and dumb lol. but NO that isnt normal in new bedford. if you dont start no trouble there probably wont be any trouble coming your way
what do you make of the cigarette offense?

I was just in New Bedford this weekend for the first time ever. We went to Ocean Explorium downtown. I don't know how to describe my impression other than I am in no hurry to go back there. It seemed rundown and icky. People talk bad about Worcester, but New Bedford is worse! Not as bad as Holyoke tho. Holyoke gave me the heebie jeebies bad.

We did enjoy our visit to Ocean Explorium and we happened upon Fort Taber Park. That was interesting visiting a fort littered with trash, glass, and covered with graffiti. We also stopped in at the museum. I was surprised to see it was completely free. A nice lady followed us around and shared some stories about the stuff we were looking at even tho it was a self guided tour. She had a completely adorable little dog my kids loved.

We had a nice visit to New Bedford, but no way would I want to be caught there in the dark. My husband had the bright idea to eat lunch at the McDonalds downtown. He's weird & doesn't like to try new places. There was a nice homeless lady outside with about 10 Dunkin Donut bags filled with stuff. She seemed harmless enough tho. I'm not used to seeing geniune homeless people like that.

GuyOnTheInternetGuy, I'm from Florence, SC. Saw you mentioned Timmonsville. You're a long way from home! I imagine you're experiencing a little culture shock.

If I was you I would avoid.....Ruth st. Ashley street, bottom of Brock Ave., South First, South Second, bottom and top of County streets, Purchase and Weld streets, Chancery Street, North Front street, Tallman street, Bottom of Bullard st. bottom of Nye street, parts of Bellevue Ave. Bottom of Sawyer....just to name a few. This is where the most crime happens, in the day time too. Hope this helps.

I live downtown kellycrash and I can say this.... it's a beautiful area (if you had just walked a few more blocks to the waterfront you would have seen the amazing architecture and history) but you are right, from an outsiders point of view, it does look somewhat rundown because New Bedford is poor. It is a big city when you take the almost 100k people we have and stick them in a 1 mile by 10 mile radius. That's a lot of people in a small area!

Growing up and then leaving and then coming back has a taught me a few things. If you look for trouble you will find it. If you walk like you own the town and hold your head up, no one bothers you. You see a drug deal, you look them in the eyes, you look away and keep walking. Essentially, you have acknowledged what they are doing and you could care less. That is how you keep out of trouble. I would walk almost anywhere at night because I know the city. That being said, I wouldn't recommend it to someone who doesn't know the area. There were 7 shootings in 3 weeks over the last month "ish". It's a high crime city especially if you look like you are from out of town! People will take advantage of you! There are a LOT of good people here... but unfortunately, there is a LOT of bad ones also.
