Easiest definition:

South Shore contains the towns south of Boston, that touch Cape Cod Bay and the Atlantic. South Coast towns touch Buzzards Bay. Cape Cod towns are excluded. Now the little section of Bourne that is NOT on the Cape? I guess that can be considered both but it is more associated with the South Coast because the location of the village of Buzzards Bay

But Sagamore Beach is more S Shore. The town is actually split into all 3 regions.

I heard the "South Coast" was a term they decided to use in place of the Fall River/New Bedford metro area because both those cities aren't exactly the nicest places (having lived down there for two years, I can attest to that...) There are some nice parts in the area, though, similar to the Cape. Quite a ways from Boston and not too expensive.

I live right outside Boston, but the South Shore isn't too far away - most of my family lives there and it's where I spent my summers. So it's more accessible to the city, and as you'd expect, it's more expensive.

So yeah... they are quite different, but either way, you are near the water.
