We might be moving to the area since DH may be taking a job in Worcester. He's committed to commuting only 30 minutes or less. Taking traffic patterns in mind, what towns are within 30 minutes of Worcester?

Shrewsbury and Holden have both been recommended to us.

Sterling, Lancaster, Leominster, Townsend, Lunenburg, Bolton, Southboro, Westboro, Oxford, and many more. Grab a map and take a look.

Years ago I lived in Shrewsbury and Worcester. I think Holden is probably the nicer of the two between Shrewsbury and Holden but I really loved living in Shrewbury.

The nice thing about Shrewsbury is that its right off route 9 and so easy to get into Boston that way. Holden is a little further. Marlboro is a straight shoot (I can't remember the name of the highway) and only about 20 minutes away.

Paxton is also nice, the town right next to Holden and Worcester.

My sister has lived in Holden for years she is actually in Jefferson now which is I guess part of Holden and she loves it there. It is a quick commute to Worcester for sure.

There are several good options. What are you looking for in terms of a town? Are public schools important to you? What price range? renting or buying?

Probably the easiest commute would be from Holden or Shrewsbury. Both are very nice towns with a lot to offer. There are also some nice neighborhoods right in Worcester as well. There are some gorgeous places off of Salisbury Street, both historic homes and new homes. However, Worcester wouldn't be my first choice if schools are an issue.

Pls feel free to share a bit more about what you're looking for and I'm sure everyone will jump in with good ideas.

Thanks so much for the input!

Like everyone else, we're looking for good schools. Hubby doesn't want too much of a "cookie-cutter" community but could probably be persuaded. He's more concerned about not having to drive too much....We've come from Chicago where it took me over an hour to drive the 7 miles to work. That's why I was interested in the traffic issue. Things look close but you never know....

I'm a little bit more open about things. I wouldn't mind a small town, as long as I didn't have to drive 20 minutes every time I wanted a loaf of bread.

Shrewsbury is a really nice town with a quaint downtown feel but plenty of shopping along Rt 9, good schools, nice neighborhoods. The north side of town (Spring St school district) has some very pretty neighborhoods.

Where in Worcester will your hubby be working?

UMass medical center.

Several people have told us to avoid the Floral Street school district. Is that valid advice?

Well, I don't think it's bad, just the others are better. Spring St area is the best in my opinion. For working at Umass, Shrewsbury is a great choice and a really easy commute since the hospital is not far from the Shrewsbury line. It also depends though on whether you'll need to get into Boston often and what your budget is.
