You could go to one of the local farm-stands to pick pumpkins. Then bring them back home and make jack-o-lanterns.

I will 2nd 495's Witches Woods suggestion. What better way to get to know each other than to be outdoors around other people who are trying to act more freaky than a first date makes someone feel?

The best haunted house I have ever been to is Barret's Haunted Mansion in Abington MA. I go every year and have never been disappointed, plus there is a decent restaurant right out front that has good food, service and a full bar with Keno. Great place to bring a date, older kids and even your cranky old spouse! LOL! JK!

Nice walk outdoors anywhere, early dinner (so as to avoid the awkward late evening first date). I love Karma, in Westford, for Asian fusion and low cost. There's Monsoon, on 2A in Acton. I
think an interesting ethnic place could show you if the new date is a tuna fish kinda person or someone who is open to other things.

Since you said "in / around Acton", I'll add, a walk around Walden Pond can be spectacular in Fall. Then maybe to Papa razzi in Concord for a beer & some good pizza (or other food). It's right near the Rotary out on RT 2. There's also (or was at least) a very decent Chinese place almost next door to Papa razzi.

Concord Center & West Center--several nice bars/ restaurants there.
