I think I know the answer to this already, but thought I would pose the question to this forum. Would commuting from Milton to Medford for work (during normal rush hour, although there may be a little flexibility here) be a nightmare? I've been looking on Google Maps to check out the traffic situation online, and it seems like it ranges anywhere from 30 minutes to 50 minutes. However, anecdotally, I've heard some people say it would be more like an hour. I know it depends on where in Milton, and if this is at all feasible, I would consider looking in East Milton to shorten the commute.

(and in case anyone asks "why Milton?", the schools, and the style of houses and neighborhood-feel are all selling points. Plus proximity to family and friends).

Thanks!

What routes are you looking at? Offhand, I can't see one predominating, unless… 93?

What part of Medford, too?

I think an hour is more correct. Not sure how you would do it, 93? Through the city? Wrapping around 95 to route 2?

I was thinking just straight up through 93. So, getting on around Granite Ave (Exit 9 or 10), and then off at Exit 31 or 32 (so, South Medford). When I Google it right now, which is obviously not the height of traffic, it says 26 minutes.

That route gets positively jammed. An hour.

Actually, 93 S of the city (both ways) always is perplexing to me. It isn't just the jam at the tunnel, there often seems to be phantom traffic jams. I'm virtually parked at times for 5-15 minutes and when I get going there was no accident to be seen or police car or anything.

I say live near the job. You'll be doing that journey around 500 times a year, and you aren't going to be paid for the time you spend doing it--in fact it's gonna cost you. There are nice houses and good schools in more than one town, and you can visit your relatives down south any time you want, but most likely you won't choose to go during the rush hour. You might even make it in 26 minutes!

93 is a nightmare during rush hour. I'd say it'd take you roughly an hour coming from Milton, and that's if you're lucky. Many people get around this by leaving much earlier, say around 5-6AM. Even then you might run into some traffic, but at least it isn't as gridlocked as it us during normal rush hour.

Nightmare commute but Milton has nice parts, also dodgier parts. Isn't there an equally nice North shore town? Winchester? Swampscott? Manchester? Andover?

I don't think that commute would be bad at all, especially if you get free parking at work. It's not like your coming up Route 3 from Marshfield.

You take local roads to 93, muddle your way thru downtown and then hop off on 28/38 depending on where you are working. Even if it did take 50 minutes each way, so what? The average commute time in Greater Boston, regardless of location, is 50 minutes.

Winchester is comparable and would save some time, but if you like Milton I would not rule it out.
