Hi! My husband started a new job in Tewksbury and we will be relocating from fairfield, CT to Mass at the end of the school year. We are interseted in looking at towns South of Tewksbury, that are family friendly, with some ameneties (I guess what I'm trying to say is we don't want a sleepy or rural town) and, of course, great schools. We will look to spend about $700 k on our new home.

Is this area we will be looking in consitered the Metro-West area? If not, how do I describe the region we will be focusing our search on?

Many thanks in advance!

Gina

Merrimack Valley is where you are searching.

Thank you 495 neighbor! I think we would like to focus our search approx. 20-30 mins south of Tewksbury. Is that still Merrimack Valley? A friend recommended Sudbury to me. Is that in the region you mentioned?

Merrimack Valley is generally defined as the area around the Merrimack River which is North of Tewksbury. It includes the suburbs of Lowell and goes all the way up to Concord, NH.

Sudbury is southeast of Tewksbury and would be considered Metrowest. It's about 40-45 min from Tewksbury in the morning rush hour and easily 1 hour in the evening. Although it has good schools, you wouldn't like it there since it's semi-rural.

Most of the towns in your price range within 20-30 min south of Tewksbury are considered sleepy towns, although you may be able to find a small home in Lexington or Winchester for $700k. Those are considered good school districts in relatively dense suburbs (think: 10k sf lots). The other more densely populated suburbs along I-95 (Rt-128) which are south of Tewksbury may not meet your school criteria. Andover might work for you since it has good schools, a nice downtown area and is right next door to Tewksbury. You will also get a lot more for your money there since it's further from Boston.

It's not south of Tewksbury but rather east of it, but I would check out Andover. $700K is not going to go far in Lexington unless you're willing to buy a condo. Otherwise, you're dealing with a long commute in order to find a non-sleepy town south of Tewksbury.

Thanks so much guys! So, can you recommend a few towns South, East and West (NOT North) of Tewksbury that would be worth looking into? I say within a 20-30 mile radius of Tewksbury. Many, many thanks for your guidance!

Commuting around Tewksbury is very congested, so you really don't want to be looking as far as 30 miles away. $700K will go further in some of these towns than others, but they are all worth considering and are within a 15 mile drive: Westford, Andover, North Reading, Reading, Burlington, Bedford.

The problem you are going to have is that most of these towns are going to be out of your price range or you might consider them to be too rural. Andover was a good suggestion, it's just not south.

Considering the OP is coming from Fairfield County, I don't think she wants to settle for towns like Reading and Burlington. I think Fairfield is pretty sleepy, although not as bad as Sudbury or Bedford. It does have a retail strip along Rt-1, easy highway access, express train to NYC and most importantly the beach! So why are you moving to MA again?
