When we moved to Massachusetts 3 years ago, we wanted a more urban experience than we were used to. We ended up in East Arlington, very near the bike path and within walking distance to both Alewife and the shops and restaurants along Mass Ave. We LOVE our current location but we recently had a baby and we are thinking about buying a place that might be better for us as our child grows. We're currently renting an apartment in a 2 family and think we might like a single family at some point. In addition, our job situation no longer requires a commute into Boston, which might open up some other towns for us. The problem is that we adore the cityish feel of Arlington and it's hard to imagine moving elsewhere. We randomly ended up in Arlington and found that we love it here. However, we really don't know much about the surrounding area and wondered if there are other towns that might also be a good fit.
We are almost daily users of the bike path, usually walking about 3 miles. We love being close enough to walk to a library and we enjoy having restaurants nearby. Having moved here from another part of the country, we were used to "luxuries" such as central AC and multiple bathrooms. We'd love to have those newer home type of amenities but I know those are rare in a place like Arlington; I don't know if moving further out would give us the kind of house we'd like in the kind of town we want. Maybe what we're looking for doesn't exist (at least in our price range).
We'd like to be within a 20 minute commute to Bedford. Budget is around 650k for a 3+ bedroom (smaller home is ok, would love central AC & other "modern" amenities), would love to be able to walk (both for recreation and to get to things like the library, bank, restaurants), decent schools (important because our kid will attend public school and I think it is wise in terms of resale value), and some sort of a town "vibe". It's going to be an adjustment if we move to the suburbs but I'm afraid it might be the right answer?? What towns might meet our needs?
