It's unfortunately true. Many people throw their trash in unlocked dumpsters. I had a friend who renovated his condo years ago and dumped most of his construction debris in a local dumpster.

Had a friend that sold his business (a store in a strip mall) but for years after, continued to use the dumpsters behind the mall. No one knew who was who.

Can you say "rip off"?! They want to charge big $ for things people will haul away for free, ie refrigerator, washers, ovens...think metal.

For everything else it's far cheaper to just rent a dumpster. I paid about $325 to have one for about 3 weeks and we filled it. IIRC, it was a 15yd dumpster. Just requires a bit of pre-planning.
