Wondering about costs. We have a ranch with no duct work (forced hot water heat.) We will start calling in for estimates but curious if anyone here has had it done and can throw out some costs.

We will also have to convert from 100 to 200 amps.

I got central air installed in my last house which was a ranch. It was around $4800 parts/labor to install a condenser outside and hook it up to the existing air handler & ductwork. I also had to upgrade my electrical panel to 200A and it cost about $1200 (this is about 1/2 of market price since a friend of mine knew a guy who was desperate for work). This was about 5 years ago when the market was bad. The cost of contractors has risen since then.

I started reading your post and though "wow! That's cheap to upgrade to 200A" then I kept reading and found out why. I'd peg that project cost anywhere from $2K to $3K depending on the electrician and the number of circuits and sub-panels in your house.

Anyway, since you have a ranch as long as you have a reasonable size attic installation should be pretty cheap and easy since they'll just drop the vents through the ceiling. Most of the work will be in the attic except for the condenser. I recently got a quote to replace my entire existing A/C system (air handler and condenser) for about $6K. I would imagine adding duct work on top of that would put it closer to 9 or 10 thousand.

I forgot that number also included 2 new ducts in my family room which is on the other side of the house from the condenser. Running ducts is very easy in a ranch as long as your attic has sufficient space to crawl around.
