To get to Kendall on Commuter Rail, you're going to transfer to the Red Line no matter what you do, so the difference between north and south isn't as big a deal. Kendall isn't an easy place to get to.

I agree. In the south, another often underlooked option for people commuting to Kendall Square is targetting the Sharon or Mansfield commuter rail stations. These stations have pretty quick trains to South Station(despite the distance), if you time it right. The 7:44 train from Mansfield takes 32 mins , while the 6:48 train from Sharon takes 31 minutes. If you add in the transfer time and parking time, you can get to Kendall in 60 minutes or less, depending on how far from the train station you live. Sharon is the more expensive area, with one of the best schools in the state while Mansfield/Foxboro will definitely give you pretty good schools with more bang for the buck for the house.

After much reading and hearing what all of you are saying, we identified that:
a) it's expensive out there for a big house in a good school district
b) route 2 line works, sharon/mansfield line works, framingham/worcester line doesn't -- you end up going backwards and it makes the commute really long

We ended up finding a house (~4700 sf) we really like in Boxborough for just over 900k.

Thanks to all!
