My husband and I hope to be moving soon (from JP to the South Shore).

We've never used a moving company before, but we plan to this time around.

We want to use a professional company with a good reputation, but we also don't want to get ripped off.

Can anyone recommend a good moving company and/or give me an idea of what we can expect to spend to move the contents of our 2-bedroom condo? (Maybe call it a 3-bedroom since we have a lot of stuff -- our storage area is currently overflowing in preparation for the move.)

I know I can shop around and call the companies directly, but I've heard that it's common practice to substantially under-quote, so I'd like to know what we're really in for. Ballpark is fine.

There were 2 moving companies recommended in this thread:

Local movers generally charge by the hour (firm quoted flat rate moves are more common for cross-country moves). For a 2bd condo move, you will probably need 2 movers and a small box truck - around $100/hour for less than a day.

I used Secure Movers for a 1 bedroom move and the rate was 75/hr for 2 guys and a truck - can't remember if it was 10 ft truck or larger. They do the moving just like the more expensive companies like Gentle Giant. One guy does the hauling, while the other guy pretty much stays in the truck to wrap the items with blankets before stacking them tightly. I ended up spending 260-275 total with tips for a move that was a little over 2 hrs, which I thought was an awesome rate. Granted the drive from the old to the new place was only 1.5 miles away, so there wasn't much time wasted on the road. Also, I did all the packing so when the movers arrive, all they did was move boxes and big items.

A few things about the rate. You're charged an upfront travel charge (1 hr or something like that depending on where you are). If you move when everyone else does, the rate is a little higher (on weekends, beginning / end of month, during school move in / move out season, etc.

Had real good luck with A-Plus movers. Costs around 95-100 an hour. 3 guys, large truck. They have moved me twice and did a great job each time.
