I want to be a high school English teacher and am wondering what degree is required. Do I need a degree in English Teacher Education specifically, or will they let me teach with a bachelor's in English Language and Literature? A lot more schools give the latter than the former.

In order to obtain a teachers license you must take the mtel tests. There's two basic ones and then a subject one. I would argue that you have to have a bachelors or higher in the subject but that might depend on the district.

For the most part a bachelors is common but some do ask for masters. Personally I didn't find the mtels to be that hard as long as you majored in what you are taking and take a decent amount of time (say a month) to study.

I don't think you should have to buy anything. The states study guide is pretty good. I passed two subject off of what they provided.

You have multiple choice questions and the essay. Don't go too crazy on the essay. If you studied what's in the guide I'd argue that's enough to pass but majoring in the subject probably can go beyond that. You need a 70% to pass. In terms of an employer they just care if you pass.

All you really need to do to become an English teacher is have a bachelor's in any subject and then pass the required MTEL tests. No district will care if you majored in literature, or another English major in college if you are good on an interview and have a good resume. I am a special ed teacher and also have taught for years as an English resource room teacher/co-taught English. I passed the English MTEL and did not even major in English.
