Is anyone familiar with the town of Maplewood or Montclair in New Jersey? Just wondering if the town of Newburyport would come in closest... Any other towns that are at least similar (budget less than 550K for a 3Br). What I like about those towns is the diversity and very friendly open people. We don't live there, observations are based on our weekend trips. Schools are not top notch, maybe second tier (fine with me).

Newburyport is nothing like Montclair in my humble opinion. Montclair was built as an upscale suburban town. Nowadays it happens to have substantial African American population. It is right in the thick of New Jersey suburbia. In Massachusetts I'd think of Winchester or Melrose for comparison--like Montclair, they're both suburbs relatively close to Boston and both back up against a large woodland reservation on high ground. Newton seems like Montclair as well. None of these have the African American presence, though. Newburyport is an old seafaring/shipbuilding town. It has lots of commuters today but I wouldn't call it a suburb of anything. It's more like Red Bank, NJ, than Montclair, but the surroundings are not as built up as the territory around Red Bank.

Newburyport is not diverse at all. You're Looking at more of a Milton, MA (west Milton) or Stoughton possibly Canton or Norwood. A denser more urban suburb might be Medford. Those towns all are pretty diverse, Norwood being less so. And having friends in all of these towns and having friends form Montclair, I'd say they are comparable.
