I was with a friend who needed to stop into Bank of America. We went to the location on Barnstable Road in Hyannis. I was surprised to see an armed, private security guard pacing the parking lot. A person who was unkempt and appeared to be unsteady, went into the bank (I assume the person may have been homeless - there are services in that area and my friend said he asked to use a bathroom). The security guard also followed him in and stayed in the bank. Is this normal? Do all BoA branches have armed security? I found it disconcerting but maybe that is their policy?

Our local branch has an armed guard. It's been robbed twice in the past couple of years, so I presume the guard is there as a deterrent. I don't know if it's their policy for all branches, though.

I visit the branches in Sudbury and Wayland frequently and have never seen an armed guard. I think they hire guards based on location (grittier locations get the guards).

EDIT: Now that I think about it, I have seen a guard at the Natick Mall location and also in Boston (financial district).

The ones I know of in Worcester county don't have guards.

8 years ago, all the ones around Sacramento had guards when I moved there.

Definitely not all of them have guards. Ive never seen them at mine. I have seen guards at a number of urban locations, including the location on Tremont across from Park St. Station. I think BOA weighs the risk of each location and decides then. Ive seem guards even at ATM only locations (Geary St in San Francisco for example), presumably because people using those ATMs were being robbed too.

I see guards in a fair number of ATM locations because they try to keep homeless that come in to keep out of the elements.

I'm wondering if they employ guards based on demographics and some type of formula on the probability of a branch or patrons being robbed and the guards are employed for insurance purposes.

Others have mentioned urban areas and high crime areas but even with what I know about the area, it is very disconcerting to see. I also am glad, that if the company thinks there is a possibility of something happening, they are being proactive. BOA is an international company. I can only imagine during the tourist season, it is exponentially busier than it is now, off season. This bank is located smack dab in the middle of a very volatile area which is also only a few blocks from Main Street Hyannis, numerous hotels and the ferries.

What is disconcerting to see about having a guard at a place that houses a large amount of money and financial transactions? I'm not getting that.
