+1 on living closer to Boston

Salem and especially Newburyport aren't particularly close to Boston. Salem is definitely practical, especially if the BF works near North Station, but if he doesn't even that gets to be a long commute with a subway transfer. If you were looking for lower density or lots of space your hand would be forced to go out into the suburbs, but you can find most of what you're looking for nearby where your BF will be working.

Thank you for the input. I haven't spent much time in Inman Square or Jamaica Plain so I'll have to add those to my list, but have been to Davis Square before and thought it was cute and seemed to have enough going on.

I agree, the drive from Salem and Newburyport would be a bit of a haul, depending on where he'd be working (he's in the construction field and will be switching from project to project).

Providence?? Once u leave Federal Hill, your pretty much in the slums and would;t rec. at all..

RI as a state is lame IMO..and i travel there almost once week..and yeah gotta love all the signs posted or clubs scene from I-95..the strip joints..
I never said Salem was dead, please read... I said Salem, comma, not Salem and... Nothing wrong with homeless. They aren't a "problem", they are people... the problem is our system that has so many people on the streets that need mental help. Newburyport is smaller than Salem and no where near as a happening.

And no, Providence is pretty darn awesome. Slums? Downtown Providence is alive and happening as is the East Side. Sure, on the edges there are some grit. Welcome to a city.

If you don't like clubs/strip clubs just don't go. I don't. Simple. Portland (OR) has a ton and the city is cool as all get out.

Salem or Portsmith NH. Newburyport is good but it's better for families or older people. The downtown is cutesy and touristy but there are lots of places to eat and things going on. Salem is crowded but you'll meet a lot of people there and it might be more what you're looking for. It seems more "real" than Newburyport.

That's interesting, I've at times had the same impression of NBPT and never could quite put my finger on it. There's no real reason it should feel that way vs. other coastal towns, but to me...it has (not always but frequently).

Agreed. That was a great way to phrase it. I love it as a weekend getaway with a lady friend, but 2 days and done...

You didn't mention your budget -- housing is *really* expensive in the Boston area... Cambridge, Brookline, David Sq., & Jamaica Plain are all going to be top dollar. Jamaica Plain wins hands down for parks; it's surrounded by the Emerald Necklace (including Jamaica Pond and the Arnold Arboretum) and has the Southwest Corridor Park and bike path that lead straight downtown.

Providence is a fantastic little city with lots of cultural institutions, music, food, etc. It doesn't have the "cutesy" vibe - it's a real city with city amenities and city problems. Just got written up by Architectural Digest as the country's best small city. It's also cheap compared to Boston.

Salem was recently written up in Curbed as an affordable alternative to Boston: Salem Home Prices Nowhere Near as Scary as Boston's - Train In Vain - Curbed Boston

Good luck with your search - there are lots of great places to choose from!
