Oh, I read your comments and responded appropriately. Just because you didn't like my complete dismissal of your positions doesn't negate that.

Well it's....over.

Arthur S decided to sell. Technically no one put a gun to his head. He had a price, it was met and he sold. What he does with his money who knows. Maybe he might start his own chain.

The other CEO's technically I think are still on payroll a bit and what happens to them afterward? Who knows.

If a business plan works for the customers, suppliers and employees what else really matters at that point?

I could argue if question 1 passes yes technically prices would go up but the same with question four.

For the most part I don't see anyone losing their shirt selling food (outside of fast food). Fast casual and supermarkets do quite well. Personally I think the prices at Shaws are sky high but hey if they find the customers and it works then so be it. Same with Nordstrom for that matter. I've never paid more than perhaps $50 for a pair of jeans but I know a women who has paid $180 (one pair of lucky's)

I don't think that MB's customers will leave. Even if prices went up a bit and frankly with the electrical jump we're all going to be paying more pretty soon.

Whether they did or did not doesn't matter anymore, because things have changed. They have outside investors now. The environment they operate in has changed in such a way that they cannot operate as they had previously. You do not know the impact that will have. No one does. It is a ridiculous conceit to think that their so-called "great business formula" continues unaffected by the changes.
Right. There's exactly one person who doesn't agree with me. bUU.

What's changed at Market Basket is that they're leveraged where before, they were swimming in cash and some of the family wanted to move that cash from the books into their pockets. It's debt financing, not equity financing. In today's incredibly low interest rate environment, it's not like Arthur T had to issue junk bonds for a known-profitable business with decades of history. It's privately held so nobody knows for certain but with debt financing, you don't give up control. At most, you might need to give up a board seat. The business model works. When Market Basket opens a store, Shaws closes theirs since they can't compete. It's an extremely well run business and it's hard to imagine that changing in the medium term.

What a ridiculous, self-centered delusion. You need to come to realize that not everyone in the world belongs to this forum and deigns to post in this thread.

If you don't like reading opposing viewpoints, Geoff, perhaps a discussion forum isn't the right place for you.

Earlier in this thread, we discussed other markets, Stop and Shop among them. The Stop and Shop in Sandwich had their beef marked with this label and I didn't get it. Apparently this was an Ahold wide practice.

Major supermarket chains changed how they label meat, surprising customers and USDA - The Washington Post

The true proof of someone incapable of discussing something is the ad hominem attack. I believe I have represented my point of view quite well. You have not. I've been hanging out on internet discussion groups since the old USENET days. Other than occasional encounters with people like you, I've never had any issue discussing something. If you have a point of view, state it coherently. Don't obliquely say you wrote something months back on a 50 page thread. You've said nothing.

I'm done here.

I did my shopping at Market Basket (Bellingham) today. It was just like old times. Great buys to be had in every department. I'm so glad Artie T kept the store.

So what is it called when someone ridiculously perceives attacks on their comments as attacks on themselves? (Of course, if you consider yourself a delusion, I could understand your reaction.)

I actually have. You, I don't recognize. But this isn't a pissing contest.

Which is exactly what I suggested. You evidently want an unrebutted soapbox. That's not a reasonable expectation when you have one perspective on Market Basket and other people have a different perspective.

The Littleton one isn't very impressive. I will still be shopping at the Westford one where all my favorite cashiers and clerks still are.
