I'm considering taking a job in Burlington. Is this a very expensive area for a single, apartment dweller? If so, are any of the surrounding areas more reasonable...I mean really reasonable, as in less than $800. (Don't laugh Is a car essential in the suburbs?

Looking for a place at less than $800/month doesn't make me laugh, it's sad that's the way things are for many people. Anywhere in eastern Mass where there are jobs you would be challenged to find a good place in your price range.

I grew up in Burlington, was married in Cambridge, and left the area 15 years ago because of the high cost of living. I own a house in a crummy community. I wish I could afford to move back to Burlington or Cambridge. You certainly should look for a small place; you might find one.

Your other options are to take a room in a room mate situation, at least for starters (there are online room mate finder services); find a mother-in-law type of apartment where you might barter something off the rent in exchange for snow removal, lawn care, repairs, etc. for the owners; do what you have to do to increase your income. That's the great opportunity in eastern Mass., good higher ed/continuing ed systems and opportunities for career advancement. You definitely need a car in Burlington. Good luck. I hope some one else has some better advice.

I live in Bedford and only a few miles from Burlington Mall. Rent in the area is more than 800 a month for an apt. rental. Also I would say you definitely need to have a car to get around in the area.

My only suggestion, as stated by willdufauve would be a roomate situation or a place that you can do work in exchange for the rent or at least part of it.

Best Wishes to you on your relocation ..
