Any recommendations for fall activities, festivals and favorite apple orchards around Boston and Metrowest? I'd love to find a place with pick-your-own apples and some great baked goods...

I don't know if this is too far out but Carlson Orchard in Harvard. We went raspberry and nectarine picking two weeks ago, loved it.

Also might be too far but George Hill Orchards in Lancaster is another place we like.

Thanks! We went to Ward Farms in Sharon the other day and they seemed to have a lot of pick your own fruit but the store didn't offer as much as we expected...looking forward to trying some other places this fall!

Wards Berry Farm is great! If you're still looking around that area, I would definitely try the Big Apple in Wrentham. One of my favorites, I try to go at least a few times a year.

I love Russell Orchards in Ipswich. They have everything and their cider and donuts are the best. Their shop is in an old barn and you get your donuts handed to you, warm right out of the fryer. They have a large shop where you can get anything from apple pies to locally made jewelry to handmade soap to local honey and it's all in the barn so you get that old New England atmosphere with a festive spirit in the air. It's on a beautiful road and even the driveway is picturesque so I'd advise taking a camera. Cider Hill Farms in Amesbury is further out but it's enormous and extremely popular. Personally, it was too crowded on weekends and somewhat more commercialized than Russell Orchards. It's beautiful though.

Whatever you do don't go to Shelburne Farm in Stow. The Globe always recommends it so it gets extremely crowded. I remember a few years ago I waited 20 min just to turn into the parking lot. Then it took another 10 min to find parking. Nowadays I go down the road to Honey Pot Hill. As 495neighbor says they are very family friendly. Best cider donuts around, but everything is good (especially pies) in their country store. Get there early right when they open to avoid lines (every orchard around here has lines if you go at 1pm).

Regarding Fall festivals, try King Richard's Faire in Carver. I've heard good things, but I haven't made the trip yet because it's a hike from Metrowest and costs nearly $100 for a family of 4 just to get in (then they get you for rides and food once you're inside). I've been waiting for both my kids to be in elementary school so they can enjoy it more. Still undecided if I will do Topsfield or King Richard's Faire this year since time is at a premium on the weekends for me personally.
