I am considering looking into homes in south of Boston. Saw a friends house in Walpole and have a relative living in Canton. Milton and Stoughton sound nice but I am not familiar with the area. Though I have been to Blue Hills before when I was younger just never knew the exact town it was in. I don't mind commuting 30 to 40 minutes to Boston since I do an hr now in NYC. Hoping to get a house around 350 to 400K, Ideally 300K though that might be unrealistic. Small house is fine at least 2 bdrm, 3 bdrm ideal with a tiny yard. Just something that is quiet but accessible to the Commuter rail and can raise a new family. A fixer upper is ok too. Any thoughts on these neighborhoods?

Thanks

30-40 minutes door to door? I don't think you can go further out than Hyde Park or Braintree. Your options open up quite a bit if you're talking about a 40 minute commuter rail train ride (which can be 1+ hours door to door).

Default similar boat

I am in the same search sort of -

I will tell you - from what I have seen Dedham has some of your criteria. Along with that, if further out, Attleboro, Sharon, Natick

Canton seems to be priced up pretty aggresive right now. Nothing is on the market.

Not driving, but 30-40 minutes on the commuter rail is about right. Other than Stoughton, I can't imagine what's available in those towns except maybe condos.

Franklin, Canton and Walpole would all be very good. You can also check Dedham as well. Closer you get to Boston trickier it gets in terms of price, crime or perceived quality of schools. Milton is expensive in some parts and not as desirable in others. Stoughton is not as desirable as e.g. Canton, Franklin, or Walpole and it is usually off the radar. Someone can probably tell you more than I would be able to. I would seriously look at Quincy as well. And then Canton, Walpole and Franklin, and in that order. You can get lot for your money in this general area.
Also in the area of Westborough and Northborough if you do not find what you looking for to the south of city.
Be aware that commute will not be as fast except in Quincy. You are looking at hour, or little bit over an hour, door to door.
Good luck.

Westwood has a few homes in your price range and is a nice quiet suburb very close to Boston, look there as well.

Stoughton will give you the most bang for your buck with the budget you've presented. The commuter rail ride itself is 45 minutes to South Station.

You have a number of options and everything will be a trade-off between budget, proximity, and perceived quality of schools. We were in a similar situation six years ago and looked at Dedham, Westwood, Norwood, and Canton. We probably should have considered Walpole, too.

There aren't that many houses on the market right now, it's probably not a bad idea to look at a few in each town and get an idea of what the towns have to offer and how far your budget will go in each town.
